“Why not use these great tools? ....
Rhyme and metre make things memorable .... “
(A.E. Stallings. Oxford Professor of Poetry).
If you wanted to construct something out of wood – a chair, a table or toy – you would need certain tools to achieve what you had in mind. It is the same with poetry. Tools such as rhyme and metre help organize your thoughts and feelings into a crafted form. As Philip Larkin (voted the best loved poet of the previous fifty years by the Poetry Book Society) said, when discussing the means of conveying poetic thoughts to the page, ‘It’s no good just writing it down! At any level that counts, form and content are indivisible.’ So where do you find these tools? The answer is in listening to poetry and hearing it from an early age so that you acquire a feel and familiarity with them.
